It is normal for your Philodendron Selloum Hope to show some stress after shipping, such as a drooping or yellowing older leaf. Unbox it promptly, check the soil, and place it in bright, indirect light. Avoid repotting or moving it repeatedly while it adjusts. An older leaf may yellow after the trip; focus on whether new growth stays healthy.
Quick Care Summary
Philodendron Selloum Hope (often classified as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum) grows best in bright, indirect light. Let the potting mix dry out completely, then give it a thorough watering and allow excess water to drain. Do not leave the soil 100% dry for more than three days. Give its large, deeply lobed leaves room to spread, use an airy potting mix, and keep it warm and away from harsh direct sun.
Light
Bright, indirect light supports full growth and healthy leaves. Gentle morning sun is usually fine, but strong afternoon sun can scorch the foliage, especially after shipping.
- South-facing window: Place the plant a few feet back or filter direct midday light with a sheer curtain.
- East-facing window: Often an excellent location, with gentle morning sun and bright daytime light.
- West-facing window: Filter hot afternoon sun or keep the plant back from the glass.
- North-facing window: A large, unobstructed window may work, but growth can be slower. Add a grow light if new leaves become small or stems stretch.
Rotate the pot occasionally for even growth, allowing space around the leaves.
Water
Check the soil after arrival. Do not water simply because the plant was shipped. Let the soil dry out completely, then water thoroughly. Do not leave it 100% dry for more than three days.
Check several areas of the pot, including deep in the mix, with a finger, wooden skewer, or moisture meter. When the soil is dry all the way through, water slowly and thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom. Empty the saucer or decorative pot so the roots do not sit in standing water.
Check the soil regularly as it approaches dryness so you can water promptly once it is fully dry. A fixed schedule is unreliable: light, temperature, season, and pot size change how quickly the soil dries. If the mix is still damp, wait and check again. Yellow leaves with wet soil can signal overwatering; drooping with dry soil can signal thirst.
Soil
Use an airy, well-draining aroid or houseplant mix. Potting mix blended with orchid bark and perlite provides a useful balance of moisture and airflow. A pot with drainage holes is essential. Avoid compacted soil that stays wet for long periods.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer is optional. During active growth in spring and summer, feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half the label strength about once a month if desired. Wait at least two weeks after delivery, follow the label, and avoid feeding when the plant is stressed or not actively growing.
Repotting
Wait until the plant has adjusted to its new home before repotting. Repot when roots fill the pot, circle densely, or grow heavily through the drainage holes, preferably in spring or summer. Choose a container with drainage only 1–2 inches wider than the current root ball. An oversized pot can stay wet too long.
The grow pot can sit inside a decorative pot until a larger container is needed. Remove it to water and allow it to drain fully.
Humidity & Temperature
Moderate humidity helps keep the large leaves looking their best, but ordinary household humidity is often adequate. If the air is very dry, use a room humidifier rather than relying on misting alone. Keep the plant warm, ideally around 65–85°F, and protect it from cold drafts and heating or air-conditioning vents. Avoid temperatures below 55°F.
Pet Safety
Philodendron Selloum Hope is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Its calcium oxalate crystals can irritate the mouth and cause drooling, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of pets’ reach, and contact your veterinarian or a pet poison-control service if any part is eaten.
Accessories
The following instructions apply if your order included a plant stand or water meter.
Plant Stand
Assemble the stand by connecting the two pieces at their center points, then place it on a stable, level surface. Open it wide, set the pot in the center while holding it securely, then gently bring the ends inward until they fit snugly around the pot.
Water Meter
Insert the probe into several areas of the soil without forcing it through roots. Check the soil at the depth recommended in the Water section. Wipe the probe after use, and do not leave it in the soil permanently.
