Unbox your plant promptly and check the soil before watering. Some leaf droop or a yellowing older leaf can happen after shipping. Place it in a stable, bright spot and give it time to adjust before repotting.
Quick Care Summary
Give Monstera deliciosa bright, indirect light, water thoroughly when the top quarter to third of the potting mix has dried, and let excess water drain. Use an airy mix and a pot with drainage. A moss pole or sturdy support helps its climbing stems grow upright.
Light
Bright, indirect light supports strong growth and larger leaves with mature splits and holes. An east-facing window is often a good choice. Near a south- or west-facing window, filter strong midday or afternoon sun with a sheer curtain or place the plant back from the glass. Low light can slow growth and reduce leaf development; sudden strong sun can scorch leaves.
Water
Check the soil rather than watering on a fixed schedule. When the top quarter to one-third of the mix feels dry, water slowly and thoroughly until excess drains from the pot. Empty the saucer or decorative container. Check deeper than the surface in a large pot, and expect the mix to dry more slowly in winter or lower light. Yellow leaves with persistently wet soil can indicate excess moisture; a dry mix and drooping leaves may mean it is time to water.
Soil
Use a loose, well-draining houseplant or aroid mix. Potting mix amended with orchid bark and perlite can provide both moisture retention and airflow. Choose a container with drainage holes and avoid leaving the roots in standing water.
Fertilizer
During active spring and summer growth, feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to its label, if desired. Wait until the plant has settled after shipping. Reduce or stop feeding when growth slows in fall and winter, or if the plant is stressed.
Repotting
Let your plant adjust after delivery before repotting. Repot when roots crowd the container or grow heavily through the drainage holes, preferably in spring or summer. Choose a pot with drainage only 1–2 inches wider than the root ball. A moss pole, plank, or other stable support gives the climbing stems somewhere to attach; tie stems loosely without damaging the leaves or aerial roots.
Humidity & Temperature
Monstera deliciosa prefers a warm room and appreciates moderate humidity. Typical indoor temperatures around 60–85°F are suitable. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature swings. If the air is very dry, a room humidifier can help.
Pet Safety
Monstera deliciosa is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Its insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can irritate the mouth and cause drooling, vomiting, or trouble swallowing. Keep the plant out of pets’ reach, and contact your veterinarian or a pet poison-control service if any part is eaten.
Accessories
The following instructions apply if your order included a plant stand or water meter.
Plant Stand
Assemble the stand by connecting the two pieces at their center points. Place it on a stable, level surface, open it wide, set the pot in the center, and gently bring the ends inward until they fit snugly.
Water Meter
Insert the probe into several areas of the soil without forcing it through roots. Check the depth recommended in the Water section. Wipe the probe after use, and do not leave it in the soil permanently.
