Ficus Audrey Care Instructions

There is a chance your plant may show signs of stress after shipping. This is completely normal. Unbox it promptly and place it in bright, indirect light. Avoid moving it repeatedly while it adjusts. Your Ficus Audrey should begin to settle in within 7–10 days, although it may take a few weeks to fully adjust to its new home. A small amount of leaf drop during this period can be normal.

Quick Care Summary

Ficus Audrey grows best in bright, indirect light, evenly warm conditions, and a consistent watering routine. Allow the soil to dry completely before giving it a full, thorough watering. It dislikes soggy soil, cold drafts, sudden environmental changes, and frequent relocation. Rotate the plant occasionally for balanced growth.

Light

Ficus Audrey needs bright, indirect light for healthy, full growth. Low light can cause slow growth and leaf drop, while intense direct afternoon sun may scorch the leaves.

South-facing window: Keep the plant several feet back or filter the light with a sheer curtain.
East-facing window: This is often an excellent location because it provides gentle morning sun and bright, indirect light.
West-facing window: This is another great spot. Be careful though as hot afternoon sun can burn the leaves. Place the plant back from the window or filter the light.
North-facing window: Light may be insufficient unless the plant is close to a large, unobstructed window. A grow light may be helpful.

Rotate the plant about a quarter turn every couple weeks so all sides receive light. Avoid sudden moves between very different lighting conditions.

Water

Check the soil after arrival. Do not water simply because the plant was shipped. Wait until the soil has dried completely before watering.

Insert a finger or moisture meter as far down as you can into the soil. Wait until the soil has dried completely, then give the plant a full, thorough watering until excess water drains from the bottom.

Do not follow a strict watering schedule. Light, temperature, season, pot size, and soil all affect how quickly the plant dries. Always let the soil dry completely before giving the plant a full, thorough watering, and never allow the roots to remain soggy.

Soil

Use a well-draining houseplant soil. FoxFarm Happy Frog can work well when mixed with orchid bark and perlite to improve airflow and drainage. Always use a pot with drainage holes, and let the soil dry completely before giving the plant a full watering.

Fertilizer

Fertilizer is optional. Your plant can remain healthy with proper light and watering, but fertilizer may encourage faster growth.

If desired, use Jack’s Classic Houseplant Special approximately once a month during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing. Wait until the plant has adjusted to its new home for at least two weeks, and introduce fertilizer gradually:

First application: Half the recommended amount
Second application: Three-quarters of the recommended amount
Third application and beyond: Full recommended amount

Avoid fertilizing during fall and winter, or when the plant is stressed or not actively growing. Never use more than the package recommends.

Repotting

Ficus Audrey prefers to be slightly snug in its pot. Repot after the plant has adjusted and only when roots are circling the pot or growing heavily from the drainage holes. Choose a pot with drainage that is only 1–2 inches wider than the root ball. An oversized pot holds extra moisture and increases the risk of root rot.

It is recommended to simply drop the plastic grow pot into the finished decorative pot until repotting is actually needed.

Humidity & Temperature

Average to moderate household humidity is suitable. Keep the plant between approximately 60–85°F and away from cold drafts, air-conditioning vents, and heating vents. Avoid temperatures below 55°F. Your Ficus Audrey may be placed outside during warm weather, but introduce it to stronger outdoor light gradually and bring it inside before temperatures become cool. Never place it in the direct sun while outside, only in the shade.

Pet Safety

Ficus Audrey is not pet safe if chewed or ingested. Its milky sap may irritate the mouth, stomach, eyes, or skin. Keep the plant away from pets and children, and wash your hands if sap gets on your skin.

Accessories

Plant Stand

Assemble the stand by connecting the two pieces at their center points, then place it on a stable, level surface. Pull the ends apart to open the stand as wide as possible. Carefully place the plant in the center, holding it securely so it does not fall while the stand is still open. Gently push the ends inward until they fit snugly around the pot and hold it securely in place.

Water Meter

Insert the probe into the soil until the tip reaches approximately two inches above the bottom of the pot. Be careful not to force the probe through any roots. Check several areas of the soil for an accurate reading. Wait until the soil reads completely dry before giving the plant a full, thorough watering. Wipe the probe clean after each use, and do not leave it in the soil permanently.
