Dracaena Mass Cane Care Instructions

There is a chance your plant may show signs of stress after shipping. This is normal. Unbox it promptly, check the soil, and place it in bright indirect light while it settles in. A few older leaves may yellow during the transition; avoid repeatedly moving or repotting the plant for at least two weeks.
Quick Care Summary
Dracaena Mass Cane does best in bright indirect light and in a well-draining soil. Allow the majority of the soil to dry before watering thoroughly, then empty any excess water. It tolerates medium light, but growth will be slower.
Light
Bright, indirect light keeps the striped foliage vibrant. Medium indirect light is also suitable, although growth may slow. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- South-facing window: Set the plant back from the glass or use a sheer curtain.
- East-facing window: Gentle morning light is often an excellent choice.
- West-facing window: Filter the hotter afternoon light or move the plant a few feet back.
- North-facing window: It can adapt if the space is reasonably bright; consider a grow light if growth becomes weak.
Rotate the pot occasionally for even growth, and introduce changes in light gradually.
Water
Check the soil after arrival; do not water simply because the plant was shipped. Let the majority of the soil dry before watering again. Check about 4-5" below the surface to feel for any moisutre. If you feel any moisture, do not water.
When the soil is dry, water slowly and thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom. Empty the saucer or decorative pot afterward. Do not follow a fixed weekly schedule: pot size, light, temperature, and season all change the drying time. Yellowing leaves and a soft cane can be signs of persistently wet soil; dry, curling leaves and very dry soil can signal underwatering.
Dracaenas can be sensitive to fluoride and mineral buildup. If tips repeatedly brown despite otherwise good care, try filtered, distilled, or rainwater and periodically flush the soil with suitable water.
Soil
Use a loose, well-draining houseplant mix in a pot with drainage holes. FoxFarm Happy Frog mixed with perlite and some orchid bark can improve airflow around the roots. Avoid dense soil that stays wet for long periods.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer is optional. If you choose to feed your Mass Cane, use Jack’s Classic Houseplant Special about once a month in spring and summer while it is actively growing. Let the plant adjust to its new home for at least two weeks first. Start at half the package strength and increase gradually only if it responds well.
Do not fertilize dry soil, a stressed plant, or during fall and winter. Excess fertilizer can contribute to brown tips and salt buildup.
Repotting
Keep the plant in its grow pot while it acclimates. Repot only when roots are crowded or the pot dries unusually quickly. Choose a container with drainage that is just 1–2 inches wider than the current root ball. An oversized pot can hold too much moisture. You can place the grow pot inside a decorative pot and remove it for watering.
Humidity & Temperature
Average household humidity is usually fine, though moderate humidity can help prevent crispy tips. Aim for roughly 65–80°F and keep the plant away from cold windows, drafts, heating vents, and air-conditioning. Avoid temperatures below about 55°F. If moved outdoors for warm weather, keep it shaded and bring it back in before cool nights.
Pet Safety
Dracaena Mass Cane is not safe for cats or dogs to ingest. Chewing it can cause vomiting and other symptoms. Keep the plant out of pets’ reach and contact a veterinarian if ingestion is suspected.
Accessories
The following instructions apply to orders that included a plant stand or water meter.
Plant Stand
Connect the two stand pieces at their center points and set the stand on a stable, level surface. Open it wide, carefully center the pot, then gently push the ends inward until the pot is secure.
Water Meter
Insert the probe into several areas of the soil without forcing it through roots, reaching near the lower half of the pot. Use the reading together with a physical soil check; water once approximately the top half has dried. Wipe the probe after use and do not leave it in the soil.
